Special Advent Service
Date: November 30th 2006
It's hard for me to believe, but the season of Advent begins on Sunday. I really enjoy Advent because it ties the anticipation felt by the Israelites as they awaited their promised Messiah to our anticipation of the return of that Messiah in the person of Jesus Christ. Many people refer to the weeks leading up to Christmas as the "Christmas Season" or the "Holiday Season", but I really treasure the connotations implied by the term "Advent Season".
The Advent season in the Presbyterian Church is typically set aside as a time to reflect on themes of hope and patience, as well as the Bible stories of prophecy fulfilled and God's faithfulness to His people. The scripture and hymns of the season like "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" cause us to reflect on how the Israelites anticipated in the coming of Emmanuel as we wait on the promised return of Christ. It reminds us of where we have come from, who we are and whose we will be forever.
We are going to be having a special Advent worship service on December 10th 2006 at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church. Our choir will be joined by choir members from the Palmdale Presbyterian Church as we lead a service of scripture, music and prayer that celebrates the Advent season. This service will be held at 4:00pm and will be followed by dinner catered by Sonny's BBQ. Dinner cost is $5.00 for Children under 12 and $8.00 per Adult. Please consider joining us as we celebrate this season and the coming of Christ.
